Hans Wilsdorf, the man that gave Rolex its name, was born in Germany. In 1900 he went to Switzerland to work in an import/export company for a few years until he left there to move to London and found the company Wilsdorf & Davis with his partner, a talented professional watch casing maker. He received an official watch rate certification. Five years later, when England decided to raise high taxes for watch imports, Rolex decided to move firstly to Biel and later on to Geneva. In 1926 Rolex presented the first patented waterproof watch with the name Oyster. This famous model was worn by Mercedes Gleitze at her crossing through the English Channel. That followed Wilson placing a full-page advertisement on the front page of the Daily Mail. This marketing strategy caused quite a stir and added strongly to the degree of brand awareness. Many other successful and well-known Rolex models followed e.g. Rolex Prince, Perpetual, Rolex Datejust, Rolex Day-Date, Rolex Oysterquartz and many more special pieces as the Submariner und die GMT-Master.
Rolex Biel and Rolex Geneva finally merged on 27 March 2004. During his lifetime childless Hans Wilsdorf turned the Rolex enterprise into a public utility company that awards a highly endowed price on a yearly basis and in addition to that an especially valuable Rolex watch since 1972. Rolex also gets involved with SOS Children’s Villages International.
